9.6.2011 Researchers at Aalto University Metsähovi Radio Observatory measured strong solar activity on Tuesday 7.6.2011, when a massive coronal mass ejection occurred on the Sun's eastern limb. The eruption was observed with three different instruments on several radio frequencies; Metsähovi's 13,7 meter radio telescope made a series of images of the eruption at 37 GHz. Also a 1,8 meter solar antenna that measures the Sun's total radio flux at 11,2 GHz produced time series data of the eruption's intensity. Additionally, the Callisto solar radio spectrometer made wide band observations of the event in the frequency band at 180-870 MHz. Lately, solar activity has started rising again after a long time of minimum activity. Strong solar eruptions can damage satellites and cause disturbances in telecommunications.
- Animation by the 13,7 meter telescope at 37 GHz (the missing data points are a consequence of saturation of the telescope's equipment by the burst's extremely strong signal)
- Total solar radiation intensity curve by the 1,8 meter solar telescope at 11,2 GHz.
